Janis Merrill joined Hesse Martone as Special Counsel in 2011. Janis has focused her practice in the areas of employment and school law for nearly thirty years, and has represented school districts in a multitude of matters involving EEOC and OCR complaints, construction claims, personnel actions, student discipline, procurement and regulatory compliance (including the open meeting law). Janis also spent more than a decade as In-House counsel for three school districts, advising them on a daily basis and assisting their administrators and boards to take corrective and preventative measures to comply with the ever-changing federal and state laws and regulations that affect schools and school districts. During this time, Janis handled literally thousands of matters for schools and school districts, including representing districts in administrative hearings involving students, personnel and bid protests.

For more than twenty-five years, Janis has been a presenter at the Arizona School Boards Association Law Conference on topics ranging from procurement issues to professional misconduct issues. She has also spoken at many Arizona Association of School Business Officers conferences.
